Jones is in charge at Rodney Parade after the sacking of Bernard Jackman and his first game as boss saw the Dragons put in a positive performance in a 49-24 Challenge Cup defeat at Clermont.
Next up is a clash with Cardiff Blues in the Welsh capital on Friday night, one Jones is looking forward to as the Dragons look to winning ways.
“I’m running the ship until the New Year. I’ve just tried to step up as best I can and the players have been excellent,” he said.
“We are buzzing for the Christmas games and they are matches which are very easy for the players to get them themselves emotionally ready for.
“We can take a huge amount out of the Clermont game in terms of the physicality we delivered and I thought our defence was excellent too.
“We scored three tries against top quality opposition and that means we can take a huge amount of heart moving forwards.”
The Dragons haven’t won in their last 22 clashes with Welsh regions and Jones hopes to end that run when they travel to Cardiff Arms Park on Friday night.
Wales flanker Ollie Griffiths won’t feature in that game or any of the Christmas derbies due to a knee injury, something Jones admitted is a disappointment.
“It’s extremely unfortunate for Ollie as he has been a standout performer for us,” said Jones.
“I’ll try and do the best possible job I can over Christmas and a derby win is something we desperately want as a group.
“We have reacted well as a group and hopefully the players can go out there and get a result as a group.
“There are talented young players at the Dragons and a lot of them are Welsh. If we can cut out the unforced errors we made against Clermont, then there is no reason why we can’t go out and get a result against the Blues.
“The breakdown is a big part of their game and we will need to be effective there.”
