Mulvihill confident ahead of Saracens clash

Cardiff Blues head coach John Mulvihill insists his side have the self-belief to topple Saracens in this weekend’s crucial Heineken Champions Cup rematch at the Arms Park.

Despite leading at half-time the Blues slipped to a 51-25 defeat at Allianz Park last Sunday and know they must repay the favour if they are to stay in contention for a quarter final place. And Mulvihill is confident his side have it in them to a cause an upset against the two times European champions.

“We have the belief that we can turn them over,” he said.
“If we play for more than 43 minutes in this game we will give ourselves a chance to cause an upset.

“We are really targeting this game. We know Cardiff Arms Park is going to be a sell-out and we haven’t played at home since Zebre so it’s a long time coming.

“Everyone is looking forward to a big performance and we want to take some confidence going into the Christmas derbies. It’s a massive game as far as the Heineken Champions Cup is concerned but it’s also a massive game going forward because we’ve got three big derbies coming up after that.

“We don’t want to limp into those derbies we want to bounce in with some confidence.”
Despite succumbing to a second-half onslaught from Saracens there were plenty of positives in their performance.

And Mulvihill insists they can improve enough to cause the English champions plenty of problems.
“We looked at the review and there wasn’t a lot of things we got wrong last weekend,” he said.

“Our defence was 90 per cent accurate across the board. There were a few times where one on one we missed tackles and our kicking game wasn’t where it should be.

“We also need to work on our ability to keep ball in the wide channels. We know that they will come with a similar sort of strategy this week and we will prepare to get the ball in the right ends of the field this weekend.

“Matthew Morgan was outstanding last weekend. We’ve got a few backs coming back and it’s good to have selection headaches.

“It was a great solo try and that’s what he can bring. He’s got that spark and X factor that can ignite us.
“Culturally we are in a good space at the moment and the boys are enjoying their rugby.”
