The Cardiff Blues outside half sat out the festive derbies with a shoulder injury but was outstanding in his comeback against Glasgow Warriors last Sunday. And the 22-year-old is excited at the prospect of figuring in his first Six Nations campaign.
“I’m over the moon to be in the squad,” said Evans.
“It came as a little bit of a shock to be honest as I’ve been out for a few weeks with a shoulder injury. I’m really happy to be there and I’ll give it my all. Everything is geared towards trying to win the Rugby World Cup.
“When you are injured you are out of the shop window so I didn’t expect to be in the Six Nations squad this time around. I am grateful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to getting going.
“Wales have built some real depth in various positions and it’s only good for Welsh rugby. You’ve got to express yourself as much as you can because in a rugby environment there’s no real hiding place.”
But first Evans is concentrating on finishing the Blues’ Champions Cup campaign on a high as they welcome Lyon to the Arms Park. Evans insists it is vitally important they take momentum into a crucial block of Guinness PRO14 fixtures.
“We still want to put in a big performance on the weekend to take into the PRO14,” he said.
“We know we’ve got a lot of things to work on so we’ll be working on them against Lyon.
“There were more positives than negatives to take out of the Glasgow game. The boys who were on in the first-half managed the windy conditions really well. In the second-half we strung together some nice bits of play and could have nicked it in the end.”
