North: ‘Key to Welsh success is togetherness’

George North insists this current Wales squad is the tightest he has been involved in as Warren Gatland’s side go in search of the title this weekend.

Wales are on a record winning run of 13 games and will complete the clean sweep if they can overcome Ireland at the Principality Stadium. And North believes their togetherness as a squad is one of the main reasons behind their success.

“The general vibe around the camp has been very good from the autumn series and especially after the summer tour,” he said.

“I feel it’s the tightest squad I’ve been involved in. We’ve all worked hard for each other and our time together has been good.

“We’ve shown that in some of our performances when we’ve had to dog it out and come together when under pressure. With Saturday in mind it has put us in a decent place.

“Ireland bring a physical game and the way they picked France apart at the end was very Sexton-esque. He wants to play that wide, fast rugby which revolves around him and brings people into the game.

“We’re expecting nothing different. I think if you look at their nine and 10 they control the game very well so I imagine there will be a few high balls to take.”

This Saturday’s test match will be Warren Gatland’s 50th and final game in charge of Wales for a Six Nations encounter.

And North insists the whole squad would like nothing better than to send him off with some silverware.

“There will be plenty of emotion from the players, the coaches and the fans,” he said.

“It’s a big game for everyone involved. We will take confidence out of what we’ve done in training and we’ll be ready to go.

“From our point of view the coaches have been great servants to the players and the country as a whole. It will be sad to see the coaches move on.

“For the boys’ point of view we can hopefully give them a good Six Nations send-off.”
