Ahead of a season-defining game with Connacht this weekend, Wales prop Dillon Lewis is confident his Cardiff Blues team has the motivation required to reach the Guinness PRO14’s end-of-season play-offs.

A disappointing 45-21 defeat to Munster in Cork on Friday means that only a win will do for the Blues when they travel to Galway on Saturday to face Irish opposition for the second straight weekend.

Speaking ahead of the crunch clash, tighthead Lewis said: “We’re playing Connacht and we know that it’s a massive game if we want to continue to compete until the end of the season.”

The Galway side sit four points ahead of the Blues with two games left to play in Conference A.

With Glasgow Warriors and Munster having already secured their play-off berths, Connacht, the Blues and Welsh rivals Ospreys are all battling it out for third place.

Three wins in the last four games has given the Arms Park side a fighting chance and Lewis is hopeful that the team can continue their good form this weekend.

“It’s so important for us to continue to play as we’ve done in recent weeks if we’re to get the result we want out in Galway,” said the 2019 Wales Six Nations Grand Slam winner.

While the Blues will be looking to come out on top, a win of any description for Andy Friend’s Connacht will see them mathematically clinch their place in the quarter-finals.

Lewis has played 12 times for Wales since making his international debut against Tonga in 2017.

Looking ahead to this season’s conclusion, the 23-year-old said: “Every team in the championship wants to be competing in meaningful games and we’re no different to that. We are working hard to reach that goal.”

Cardiff Blues are aiming to reach the play-offs for the first time since the system was introduced in the 2009-10 season.
