The men from Llanelli face the Ospreys in a play-off at the Liberty Stadium this Saturday (kick-off 7.45pm) with the winner earning a place in next season’s top tier European competition.

And Halfpenny has vowed to do all he can to ensure the Scarlets are rubbing shoulders with Europe’s elite.

“It’s a massive game at the weekend,” said the Wales and British & Irish Lions full-back.

“We know what is at stake – a place in the Champions Cup and as a team and players that’s where we want to be playing. It’s a huge occasion for the club to be playing in the Champions Cup.

“The Champions Cup is everything. It’s where we want to be playing. As players you want to be there and to be testing yourself against the best teams in Europe.

“It’s huge for the club as well as the fans.”

As if the prospect of a Champions Cup play-off wasn’t enough, Halfpenny insists the Scarlets are extra motivated due to the fact it’s against arch rivals the Ospreys.

But the 30-year-old has warned his team-mates they will have to play for the full 80 minutes if they are to come out on top against Allen Clarke’s men.

It is the Ospreys who will have home advantage and a bumper crowd is expected.

“At times this season we feel like we’ve shown glimpses of what we’ve been capable of,” said Halfpenny.

“In parts we’ve played how we want to play, but we probably haven’t done it for the full 80. It’s a chance for us at the weekend to really put an 80-minute performance in.

“The derbies are always massive and this one will be the same with what is at stake. The history between the Scarlets and the Ospreys adds some extra spice to the game.”
