Their day at Twickenham had started brightly, a composed 17-0 win against Japan in the morning (with tries from Luke Treharne, Afon Bagshaw and Joe Goodchild) making it two consecutive victories on the bounce, having finished day one with a good result against Spain.
“Scotland was a frustrating one because we really gifted them two first-half tries,” observed head coach Richie Pugh. “From there we didn’t really get into the rhythm of the performances we’d displayed in our first four games.” The final score read 33-7, with Wales’ consolation coming via a scintillating solo try by Morgan Williams (Scarlets), his second such effort this weekend.
“We will look back and reflect, and we’ll see that it has been a positive weekend,” continued Pugh, whose team now lies above Kenya and Japan in the rankings. “We’ve picked up the most points out of all the bottom three teams, and the performances within those results have given us a lot to be pleased about.”
With the final action of the season moving to the French capital, the theme continues: there are no easy games on the World Series. “We’ve got to make sure we recover well this week and that we’re ready to go again,” Pugh said. “We’ll pick ourselves up because you can’t just reflect on one game. We’re good to go again.”
The draw for Paris will be made following the conclusion of today’s tournament. For all the latest updates from the World Rugby Sevens Series, click here.
