The former Bridgend centre, who captained Wales once and earned 30 caps, was presented with his honour by former Wales and British & Irish Lions team mates JJ Williams and Graham Price at the gala event at Cardiff City Stadium.

The 67-year-old became the 146th member of the Roll of Honour on an evening when Wendy White (Netball), Ryan Giggs (Football), Michaela Breeze (Weightlifting) and Jazz Carlin (Swimming) were also elevated to the most exclusive list in Welsh sport.

Fenwick was one of six new caps who were involved in a 25-10 victory over France at Parc de Princes in 1975. It remains the second biggest margin of victory in Wales 46 trips to France

“My goal was always to play for Wales and to beat France 25-10 on my debut really started a new era in Welsh rugby. To score a try as well in that game after only four minutes also meant I didn’t really care if they didn’t pick me again,” admitted Fenwick.

Another debutant on that great day, Pontypool prop idol Price, was also at Cardiff City Stadium and joined fellow Roll of Honour member JJ Williams in singing the praises of his former team mate. As well as helping Wales to win the Grand Slam in 1976 and 1978, he also played in four tests alongside him on the 1977 Lions tour to New Zealand

“Steve was so laid back it was to the point of horizontal. I’ve never seen a player who was so cool, calm and collected,” said Price.

“We had guys like Ray Gravell, who were telling us what he wanted us to do to the opposition and was bouncing off the walls, and then you would have Steve, who was almost asleep in the corner! But if you ever wanted a man to kick goals for your team, Steve was your man.”

After winning his final Welsh union cap, Fenwick went on to play for Cardiff Blue Dragons and win two caps for the Wales Rugby League team.

The Welsh rugby players on the Roll of Honour are: Phil Bennett (2007), Sir Gareth Edwards (1998), Non Evans (2012), Steve Fenwick (2019), Gerald Davies (1992), Mervyn Davies (2001), John Dawes (2003), Arthur Gould (2007), John Gwiliam (2005), Carwyn James (1999), Barry John (1999), Ciff Jones (1991), Ken Jones (1990), Jack Matthews (2006), Bryn Meredith, Cliff Morgan (1991), Gwyn Nicholls (2002), Graham Price (2017), Clive Rowlands (2013), Billy Trew (2008), Bleddyn Williams (1997), JJ Williams (2009), JPR Williams (1994)
