Warren Gatland’s side are top of Pool D with victories over Georgia and Australia already in the bag in Japan and next up is a meeting with Fiji.
“I am hoping we put in an 80-minute and strong defensive performance,” said defence coach Edwards. “I was pleased with large aspects of the game against Australia.
“We were under huge amounts of pressure in the second half, but we have not put in an 80-minute performance yet at the World Cup. We won’t change our defensive system much.
“We want to cut time down for opposition nines and tens. We will look to tackle in twos as much as possible and then if they get their hands free, you have to squeeze in around those.
“Fiji are definitely one of the best sides in the world at sevens so that will cross over. They are definitely one of the teams you don’t want to break structure too much against.”
Wales beat Georgia 43-14 and then downed Australia 29-25.
It has been a good start, but the message from head coach Gatland and his staff is nothing has been achieved yet.
Wales have been preparing for the Fiji game in Otsu and will travel to Beppu on Sunday.
After Fiji Gatland’s men have a short turnaround before meeting Uruguay next Sunday.
“After the Australia game when we knew we had a break it was about rest, switching off, and even trying to forget about rugby a little bit to recharge the batteries,” Edwards said.
“We are in Test week now, we are fully focused on Fiji, and we saw a team last night that is a huge threat. We are excited about playing a Test match first and foremost and obviously the fact it is at a World Cup and we could top our group makes it even more special.”
Fiji have pushed Australia hard, suffered a shock defeat to Uruguay, and beaten Georgia in their tournament to date.
Edwards knows a third straight win would virtually put Wales into the knock-out rounds.
“As a coaching group we have been in a semi-final once. I think after the two games we’ve just won I will be unbelievably disappointed if we don’t win our next three,” he said.
“If we do win our next three we are in the semi-finals and back to where we were in 2011.”
