As Wales prepare for their crunch Guinness Six Nations clash with England at Twickenham captain Alun Wyn Jones says he wants to turn good performances into good results.

Wayne Pivac’s side won their opening fixture of the championship against Italy before back-to-back defeats against Ireland and France respectively. Wales now face a difficult trip to London to face an England side who are still in contention for the championship having beaten Ireland comfortably.

“We had a decent start at home and if you look at the other two games we just made far too many errors despite having more territory and possession,” said Jones.

“We lost the ascendancy particularly in the geography around the field. All credit to France for the way they played: we created a lot of opportunities and while that can look good, you have to take them.

“We all know that Test rugby is about winning and we have not done that. The performances in patches have been pleasing, but only to a point.

“It is only pleasing when you win and there is no consolation in a certain amount. You can be really reactionary and throw the baby out with the bathwater or you can step back and think there is change.

“I said from the outset that change is no excuse and there are a large proportion of players still here. We are adapting with the mindset of evolution and development.”

Jones is well aware of how difficult it will be to win at Twickenham but the 137-times capped Wales international is demanding a response from his players.

He said: “I’ve played at Twickenham a few times. I’ve had a few wins and a few losses there.

“Having been in the England-Wales week a few times, we know what is coming. That shows the significance of the occasion, whether it’s at Twickenham or Principality Stadium.

“It is always a big week and will be for however long it goes on for. That’s the special thing about England-Wales weeks.

“England have been building this tournament after a disappointing start. They got the bit between their teeth in the last game and they are putting the pieces together to be the complete team they showed they were in the World Cup.

“They are trying to get back to that. It is pretty rudimentary, not the way they play but in the way they impose themselves. What they were lacking they have shown evidence of in the last couple of games.”
