Treharne reflects on LA story

Wales Sevens captain Luke Treharne has given his assessment on his team’s performance at the LA Sevens over the weekend.

“We saw an improvement throughout the games on day one,” said the 27-year-old, who is a qualified doctor. “It culminating in a good win over Spain in the final group match.”

Their opening encounter against New Zealand saw the world’s top-ranked side claim a 42-7 win, with Wales’ try coming from Jay Jones. Darren Edwards’s men then faced England in an equally effortful game, faring slightly better in a 31-14 loss that saw a try double for Dragons flanker James Benjamin.

The win against Spain, then, was most welcome – especially since Los Leones had already seen off England in a 22-5 upset. Benjamin was once again on the scoresheet, as was Ben Roach, while the returning Lloyd Lewis bagged himself a brace.

Treharne described a stern test on the second day of proceedings. “Coming up against Argentina in the first game, they were clinical against us and got the win,” he said. Wales had a try from debutant Caine Woolerton (Ospreys) to show for their efforts in that match, but there was still 14 more minutes of tribulation for the team.

“The final game was disappointing against Kenya, because we started really well but fell off in the second half,” Treharne said, with Lewis adding his third try of the weekend in a 29-5 reverse.

“It was good to get another four new boys capped in a tournament and they all showed they could play on the series,” he added, referring to Woolerton, Callum Carson, Alex Grey and Callun James.

“We will have another tough week of training and look for an improvement in Vancouver.”
