World Rugby announced the cancellation as part of their response to the global COVID-19 pandemic following detailed consultation with the Federazione Italiana Rugby.
Wales U20 head coach Gareth Williams, who guided his side to notable victories against Argentina and New Zealand in last year’s tournament in Argentina, backs the stance taken by the game’s governing body.
“Naturally, we are disappointed with the cancellation, but it’s wholly understandable with the challenges the world faces,” said Williams.
“We’d like to commend World Rugby in making an early decision that allows us to consider contingencies in working together with the Regions in regards to the player’s development.
“The Wales U20’s squad would like to wish everyone their very best in these unique circumstances we face.”
