But while the former Wales and British & Irish Lions hooker has been relishing the break from the game, he can’t wait to get back into typically explosive action when the PRO14 returns in August. Two rounds of regional action will be the perfect warm-up for the Dragons ahead of their European Challenge Cup quarter-final clash with Bristol.
“Normally it’s wall to wall rugby so a break can be a benefit. This period has probably put another two years on my career,” suggested Hibbard during a recent webinar session for his region.
“The lockdown has certainly made me appreciate time with my family. With rugby you don’t always get to spend too much time in the house, due to all the travelling, training and games. It’s been nice to spend time with the kids and you get to know them even more.”
But with the clock no ticking positively to a return to action on the field the 36-year-old is looking forward to getting back into the bosom of his other family, the Dragons squad.
“You can train in the gym or go for a run, but the interaction with the boys is a big factor for me. When you see them it picks you up and you miss those daily interactions,” he added during the ‘A Night with the Dragons’ on-line session.
“We’re all looking forward to getting back. I don’t miss the games – it’s more waking up the next day battered and bruised. Knowing you’ve been in a battle, that’s what I miss!”
