The Big Walk, in aid of Prostate Cymru, is a 26-mile journey that in normal times sees walkers embark on a route that also takes Bonvilston, Cowbridge and Bridgend, before finishing at a club that has produced numerous Wales internationals – including current national coach Jonathan Humphreys and British and Irish Lion Dafydd James.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, participants are being encouraged to complete the 26 miles at their own pace in July – whether in a single day or throughout the month – wherever they like. A Big Walk chart has been designed to allow walkers to map their progress as if they’re doing the regular route.
Chris Leyshon, founder of The Big Walk and a Community and Sports Officer for Prostate Cymru, said: “It’s amazing to see the communities throughout Wales come together every year to support Prostate Cymru. We started the event back in 2014 with Warren Gatland and just 50 walkers, and last year we had a staggering 522 walkers.
“We are urging people of all ages and abilities to get their walking boots on in July to help men in Wales who are in the fight against prostate cancer. Although this year’s event is different, we will be together in spirit.”
Prostate Cymru was the nominated charity for former Wales coach Gatland’s farewell dinner in late 2019, whilst a message for participants this year has come from ambassador Carol Vorderman MBE.
In order to continue the fun themes of past years, 2020 will be ‘Go Blue for the Boys’, with participants encouraged to show their support on social media using the hashtags #TogetherinSpirit2020 and #SavetheMalesinWales.
