The photograph of the Ospreys, Wales and British and Irish Lions second row – basking in the Cardiff downpour after steering his team to a 25-7 triumph to claim the Grand Slam – saw off competition from four other iconic images.
Winning in the rain, 2019, captured by Huw Evans Agency, had 14% more of your votes than its nearest rival. It’s a performance as dominant as that of Wales’ captain on a day that is fresh in the memory for rugby fans, coming as it did just a year and a half ago.
Not long after the photo was taken, Wales’ talisman, still on the pitch and somewhat breathless, responded to the reporter’s question about how proud he felt to be a Welshman in that moment. “I could be sitting in the stands right about now, to be honest with you,” answered Jones. “Anything can happen when you work hard. We’re a proud nation and we’ve showed that over the last nine weeks.”
