The new head coach at the Liberty Stadium officially took charge on July 1 and began work during lockdown which made for a tricky start to his tenure.
Booth saw his team draw with the Dragons in Swansea in their first fixture despite Wales wing George North receiving an early red card in that game.
They were then beaten by Cardiff Blues the following week.
Reflecting on the reversal to the Blues at Rodney Parade, Booth said: “Overall it was disappointing. You could see that from the body language of the players at the end.
“It was probably a bit of a reality check which is never a bad thing. We approached these two games with a certain plan and we knew we’d be a bit short in different bits and pieces.
“Now we know where we are , we’ve finished the season off, and we can move on.”
Former London Irish, Bath and Harlequins coach Booth added: “I’ve learned a lot about people and that was my overriding want – to see what we’ve got.
“To see people live and what they do with and without the ball is vital. I’m pleased we’ve shown character in both games, but overall we need to be more precise and grow.
“We now know where we are.”
The coronavirus pandemic has meant there will be very little time between the end of the 2019/20 Guinness PRO14 season ending and the new campaign beginning.
Booth can’t wait to lead the Ospreys into his first full season.
“It’s important to have a little bit of a mental break now. For the players and coaches it’s been pretty full on since we’ve been back,” he said.
“There have been lots of things to do and now we take a deliberate pause which is the most important thing.
“Everyone is having a down week across the regions this week and then we’ll get busy with what’s to come.
“We have to be ready. There are elements of our plan which haven’t had attention and now they’ll be getting attention for sure. We need to start progressing to the team we want to be.
“We understand this is going to be a journey and not a quick fix. We need to start climbing the mountain.”
