Glenn Delaney can’t wait to lead the Scarlets into his first full Guinness PRO14 season as head coach when the 2020-21 campaign begins this weekend.

Scarlets just missed out on a play-off place last term, but there is a quick turnaround to action returning with Munster due in Llanelli on Saturday.

Delaney said: “It will be physical and direct and they’ll have a wonderful tactical kicking game.

“They’ve got a massive, physical presence in midfield which is new for them, but the old Munster is still there.

“They’ll maul, they’ll brawl, and you know they’ll be great in the contact area. They’ve got players who can break you.

“We’re going to be facing a brilliant side, what a challenge for us, and I think it’s a great way to start the new PRO14.”

The Scarlets warmed up for the new season with a pre-season friendly with Welsh rivals Ospreys at Parc y Scarlets last week.

Wales and British & Irish Lions centre Jonathan Davies featured in that game and Delaney added: “It’s been a funny pre-season because we finished last year and now we’re into competitive games straight away.

“There are so many guys who haven’t had a run. It really served a purpose.

“It was good to get it done and I suspect you’ll see a bit more of this. All the coaches are having the same challenge in trying to get guys games.

“Jon is as good as gold and in full training. He’s just continuing his exposure. He was really happy to get out there and there were a few nerves – it doesn’t matter how much experience you’ve got.

“It was great to see him out there smiling and he did a couple of nice things. He got through it pretty well and we’re really happy with how he’s come through. As an exercise I think it was great.”

Scarlets will be without Johnny McNicholl for eight weeks after he suffered a nasty ankle injury in the European Challenge Cup quarter-final defeat by Toulon.

But Leigh Halfpenny is back in full training after passing head injury protocol tests.

Rhys Patchell could be involved against Munster, but the game is likely to come too soon for Liam Williams and Rob Evans.

Scarlets have also added former Wales wing Aled Brew to their ranks as injury cover. Brew will have played for all four Welsh regions once he’s turned out for Delaney’s side.

“There is no aim to block anyone’s patch, it’s purely reacting to injuries,” said Delaney. “Johnny had an ankle injury against Toulon, but the more serious one is Tomi Lewis.

“He’s going to be out for a long time with a serious knee injury which has been repaired.

“Bringing in Aled is great. He’s a fabulous man, a powerful player.”
