Josh Adams watched Wales’ 18-0 win over Georgia with his feet up, but there will be no time to rest or relax when the Cardiff Blues wing returns to the side to face England this afternoon.

Adams is one of rugby’s hottest properties right now and in the last year he has been a young man very much at the top of his game.

A key figure in Wales’ 2019 Guinness Six Nations Grand Slam, Adams ended the 2019 Rugby World Cup as the tournament’s top try-scorer. His team finished fourth in Japan.

Since the turn of the year, the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has hit rugby hard, but even that has failed to stop Adams. He has continued his fine form with the Blues since joining from Worcester Warriors and scored a hat-trick on debut. In total, he has eight Blues tries from 10 games.

For Wales, the strike rate is also very good.

There were seven Adams tries at the Japan World Cup and since making his Test debut in February 2018, the 25-year-old has 14 tries in 27 Tests.

Now England are next in his sights.

“Of course everybody understands that with no disrespect to Georgia, England are a far greater outfit than the one we faced last weekend,” Adams said.

“We’re under no illusions as to how good they’ve been for the last couple of weeks. It’s Test match rugby. We’ve been working hard this week, as we have done every week, and hopefully we can take our week’s practice on to the field. Our practice has been really good for the past couple of weeks and it’s been quite frustrating we haven’t taken that from the training field to the match.

“If we can do that this Saturday then I think we’ll be in a great spot. I believe we’re down to ninth in the rankings at the minute and England are up in second. What is most important is we stick together as a group which we’ve been doing really, really well. We just focus on ourselves.”

Adams continued: “We understand England will be a step up compared to Georgia. We’re looking to step up ourselves. We’ve been working hard on aspects of our game where we think we can get some joy against England. I’m sure they’ll be doing the same for us.

“Winning any Test match is massive, but it is vitally important we don’t blow it out of proportion and take the game in our stride. It’s a Test match and there is a Test match the week after.

“It’s good to see our learnings from the previous games are showing in training. The most important thing for us is to keep building from our previous performances, keep working on what we could have done better, and implementing them in the games under pressure.”

Wales have lost to Ireland and beaten Georgia in the Autumn Nations Cup so far, but England at Parc y Scarlets will be the toughest challenge yet for Wayne Pivac’s side.
Adams, who is just one of a number of back-three options available to head coach Pivac, is looking forward to the challenge.

“Of course it was nice to get the win against Georgia,” he said.

“It had been a while, so was vitally important. There were a number of changes and the guys that played handled the conditions well. There were still aspects we could have been better on.

“But four boys won their first caps, a couple won their second and it was their first start, so if you take all that into consideration, the boys did exceptionally well. It was important to get that win.”
