Wales fell to a narrow loss against World Cup finalists England in Llanelli on Saturday but there was a significant improvement in the home side’s performance.

And Scarlets centre Williams is adamant Wales are on an upward curve and is confident good times are around the corner.

“We are building for 2023, and there is definitely a good mix of youth and experience,” said Williams.

“The boys have got used to training together and knowing each other. We are just going to get better and better.

“We have made up a lot of ground, and we will keep moving forward. We were ready for that physical battle, and I think we were physical ourselves.

“Of course we are not happy with the scoreline, but we are happy with how we are building. We have got to be better again than we have been (against Italy), and we will be.”

Despite falling on the wrong side of the result Williams put in an impressive individual performance which included his first Wales try on just his second cap.

And the score was all the more special due to the 24-year-old’s recent battle with testicular cancer.

“I have come a long way in the past 18 months, and I can look back with pride,” he said.

“If you had told me at the time that in 18 months I would be starting against England and getting my first try, I wouldn’t have believed you. I am grateful for that.

“I thought the try was going to be disallowed, but I am happy it was a try. I kept chasing and it was quite a simple try.

“It was my first international try, and one that I will remember for a long time. Imagine if there had been 80,000 at the Principality Stadium going mad, but it was still surreal knowing that my family were celebrating at home and going mad.

“I celebrated pretty intently to no fans, which was kind of embarrassing! I got a few messages (from the family), and I think a few of them were crying and screaming.”

Williams’ centre partner Nick Tompkins is also confident Wales are heading in the right direction and believes their attack is very close to firing on all cylinders.

“There are things we draw up and think are ready to go, where if we can pull the trigger, we’ve got it,” said the Dragons centre.

“Things happen though – losing the ball in contact, things like that. That is something we need to manage, because I believe if we do get into positions where we can use and implement these opportunities we will be very dangerous.

“It’s going to come and if we keep chipping away the rock will crack. We just have to keep pounding at it.”
