The Carmarthen-born scrum half qualifies for Italy via his grandparents on his mother’s side, the Callegaris, of the family. He has already played for Italy at U18 and U20 levels in wins over the land of his birth.

He is not the first Welsh-born scrum-half to play against Wales at senior level. Crickhowell-born Dewi Morris played four times against Wales in his 26-cap career with England, helping his side win the Grand Slam at Twickenham against Wales in 1992.

Llandovery-born Dai Gent was another scrum-half who turned out for England. He made his debut against the 1905 All Blacks after failing to win a place in the Welsh team after playing in a trial.

He won five caps and played against Wales in 1906 and 1910. He lost the first game and then stopped the all-conquering side that had secured Grand Slams in 1908 and 1909 from making it three in a row in 1910 by helping England win at Twickenham.

Two other English Grand Slammers who were born in Wales were WJA ‘Dave’ Davies, from Pembroke Dock, and Geoff Conway, who was born in Cardiff. Davies won all three games either side of WW1 against Wales and only lost once in 22 internationals.

He captained England 11 times, wining 10 and drawing one, and was in four Grand Slam winning sides. Conway won three of his four games against Wales and was in three Grand Slam sides in his 18 cap career.

John Kendall-Carpenter was another top-class English forward who was born in the Welsh capital. He made four appearances against Wales in his 223-cap career and went on to become one of the founders of the Rugby World Cup.

Newport full back Stan Williams made three appearances for the 1910 British & Irish Lions in South Africa before winning the first of his four England caps against Wales at Swansea in 1911. He was born in Rogerstone and picked for England because Newport had joint affiliation to the RFU and the WRU.

The old county of Monmouthshire produced a number of England internationals. Tom Woods, born in Pontypool, played five times for England as a forward in 1920 and 1921 and won a Grand Slam playing alongside Davies and Conway in 1921. He went on to play for Wales at rugby league.

The Evanson brothers, Wynham and Arthur, were both born in Llansoy and went on to play for England. Wyndham won five caps before Wales had an international side, while Arthur made his debut against Wales in 1882, kicking two conversions.

The MacGregor brothers from Pontypridd opted to play for Scotland rather than Wales. Duncan was picked as a reserve for Wales against the Scots in 1907, but instead opted to take up an invitation to play for Scotland in the same game.

He made the right choice because Scotland won 6-3 in Edinburgh and went on to secure the Triple Crown and Home Nations title. John won his single cap against Ireland in 1909.

Aberavon forward Oliver Piper, born in Neath, won eight caps for Ireland in 1909-10 and also toured South Africa with the 1910 Lions. He played twice against Wales without success.

In more recent times, Bath and England lock Nigel Redman won 20 caps, played at two World Cups and toured with the 1997 Lions. He was born in Cardiff and played against Wales twice.
