Wayne Pivac’s Wales will face Ireland at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in round one as both teams look to start the tournament with a win.
Ireland have named 2017 British & Irish Lions prop Tadgh Furlong in a 36-man squad in what is a big boost to Farrell.
Leinster tighthead Furlong has been struggling with back and calf injuries and hasn’t played any form of rugby since February, but he is now back in full training.
Furlong’s Leinster team-mate Rhys Ruddock has also been rewarded for his fine form in the Guinness PRO14 with an international call.
Farrell has also named two potential debutants in the uncapped Ulster prop Tom O’Toole and Munster scrum-half Craig Casey.
Jacob Stockdale misses out on selection due to a knee injury.
“Since the autumn international window the club season has had a good few disruptions and the cancellation of the European fixtures means there have been less opportunities for players to show form or to return from injury and get some minutes under their belts,” said Farrell.
“Tadhg hasn’t played in quite a while but he is ready to join the group. Unfortunately, Jacob will not be available to us.”
Ireland’s squad is captained by the experienced Johnny Sexton.
