Callum Sheedy insists Wales will be keeping their feet firmly on the ground following their stunning Triple Crown victory over England, but is confident there are good times ahead.

The Bristol outside-half played a starring role off the bench kicking three crucial penalties in the final quarter of the game which was crucial in getting Wayne Pivac’s side over the line. Sheedy admits he still has to pinch himself at how his season has gone having won his first cap against Ireland in the Autumn Nations Cup.

“I hope the Welsh people enjoy this win, as they should,” said Sheedy. “In tough testing times it’s great to get a win over England – they should enjoy every minute of it.

“We won’t get too carried away with what is happening outside the circle, we’re very aware of what we’ve done well and what we need to work on. It’s great to get three wins but the next game is Italy and that’s going to be a huge Test.

“Grand Slam might be said in the public but it won’t be said in the circle. Alun Wyn Jones won’t let it.

“We’ve got some unbelievable leaders here, very experienced players who have been around for years and been around the block. We know Italy are a very dangerous side.

“As we saw in the autumn, we weren’t great against them and they definitely tested us. We could have easily made that game a bit of an arm wrestle.

“Going to Italy is going to be very tough and we’re under no illusions. All I know for a fact won’t let any complacency get into this squad and rightly so.”

Sheedy was also full of praise for his half-back partner Kieran Hardy who put in an impressive performance on his first Six Nations start, which included a well-taken try. Hardy and Sheedy go back a long way having played with each other with Jersey in the Championship.

And Sheedy is delighted to have reunited with the Scarlets scrum-half on the international stage. “Kierz is a brilliant player,” said Sheedy.

“I remember growing up with him in the under-16s. In under-11s he was playing for the Scarlets and I was playing for the Blues.

“You could see from a young age he was a class player. I really enjoyed playing alongside him for Jersey – he was good for them – and he’s gone from strength to strength.

“We’re fortunate in the squad that we’ve got Tomos Williams, Lloyd Williams and Gar Davies who are pushing him and getting the best out of him. In terms of having a successful squad it’s all about having players who are pushing each other to get the best out of the guy in the starting shirt.

“Kierz was excellent and Gar was excellent to finish the game off.”
