Dragons back-row Wainwright, who has 29 caps for Wales at the age of just 23, captained his region in a 42-26 defeat by the Ospreys at Rodney Parade on Sunday.
Wainwright’s Dragons have two remaining Rainbow Cup games against Glasgow Warriors and Leinster to come before the season concludes.
Then comes three summer games with Wales hosting Canada and Argentina twice in Cardiff in July – matches Wainwright plans on being involved in if his form warrants selection.
“To try and get selected is definitely the goal for me,” said Wainwright on his Wales hopes.
“The games are at the Principality now so I’ll be looking forward to that, but I’m just concentrating on the next two matches against Glasgow and Leinster for the Dragons.
“I’ve definitely been playing my best rugby at No 8 over the past couple of games and I’m enjoying playing there. I feel comfortable at the back of the scrum.
“It’s nice to have a couple of different options and I’m quite versatile. Hopefully I do get a chance to play there and can show what I can do.
“It’s nice to be able to play six and eight and switch in between, but if I get the chance to play, I’d just like to play well.”
Reflecting on the Ospreys defeat, Wainwright added: “We spoke after the game about how we missed a few opportunities.
“The breakdown let us down – that was probably the main learning – and hopefully we can take that into the next two games.
“It was a good experience for me to be captain and a very proud moment for me to represent the region.
“It was a nice personal achievement for myself.
“Hopefully I’ll get the chance to do it again another time.
“It’s been quite stop-start with a couple of weeks on and then a couple of weeks off, but we said from the outset the Rainbow Cup is a chance to give some of the more inexperienced boys a chance to play and try and build something over the next couple of weeks.
“Like we saw against the Ospreys with Aneurin Owen getting player of the match, it’s a great chance for boys to put their hand up for selection for the next couple of games and heading into next year.”
