Willis Halaholo preparing for Wales' clash with Argentina

Willis Halaholo has spent most of his downtime at Wales’ Vale of Glamorgan training base in bed when he’s not been training with Wayne Pivac’s side.

The Cardiff centre has a young family at home on the banks of Roath Lake which means he gets limited sleep when not in international camp.

Wales are preparing for their summer Tests in a secure bubble allowing Halaholo some rest, but he knows he and his team will have to be right on the money against Argentina on Saturday.

Pivac’s men started their summer series by hammering Canada 68-12 and scoring 10 tries, but the Pumas will be an altogether tougher nut to crack.

Argentina claimed a famous win over New Zealand in 2020 and also drew twice with Australia and their squad to face Wales is packed full of Test quality.

“It will be a big test and a big step up from last week,” said Halaholo. “Hopefully we’ll take the learnings from last week. We know Argentina are a different beast.

“They get better and better as game goes on so we’ll try and shut that down and see how we go.

“Canada went well for a first hit out. I thought the boys gelled. We blew the cobwebs out a bit and a lot of boys stepped up.

“I’ve been doing a lot of sleeping! I’ve got four kids at home so I don’t get this luxury every day. You know you’re getting old when you enjoy peace and quiet.

“I’m just trying to put my hand up and show I can play at this level. I want to soak up any information and experience I get.

“There are bigger goals in the future, but now I’m just trying to put my hand up and show I can step up at this level.”

Halaholo made his Wales debut in the 2021 Guinness Six Nations and his first campaign was one to remember as Pivac’s side claimed the title.

With 13 of Wales’ best players either on the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa or currently out injured, head coach Pivac is looking at the next generation.

Halaholo might be young in terms of caps – he has five to date – but his rugby experience is huge.

He added: “It was awesome to have a crowd against Canada. It felt a little bit strange.

“I hadn’t played in front of a crowd since 2019 and since my knee injury so it was good and especially having my family there just added to the occasion.

“It was my youngest one’s first time at one of my games, so it was quite a special occasion to have them there. I saw them quite early on in the warm-up and got quite emotional.

“That really got me up for the game.

“I’m just happy to be involved in the environment. It’s good for us to see how things go. It’s pretty much like we’re on tour. We’re staying put in the hotel and lots of boys are bonding.

“We’re in each other’s pockets.”

Wales have made three changes from the side which beat Canada for the first of two back-to-back meetings with Argentina.

Hallam Amos replaces the injured Leigh Halfpenny at full-back, Owen Lane comes in for Tom Rogers on the wing, and Kieran Hardy starts at scrum-half with Tomos Williams dropping to the bench.

Wales are captained again by centre Jonathan Davies.

“The messages of this summer series are to compete and win games, but obviously, building for 2023,” said the experienced Scarlet.

“This is an excellent challenge for everyone. Argentina have had some massive results over the last 12 months, so we are fully aware of the type of team we are going to play on Saturday.

“Argentina like to enforce the game, bring their emotion into the game, and they have a strong kicking game as well.

“So for us it’s making sure we negate those threats, match them emotionally and make sure we don’t allow them to build momentum, because once they get the rumble on they are a tough team to bring down.”
