Alun Wyn Jones says his Wales side are planning a strong performance against New Zealand – one which he hopes will be enough to secure a first win over the All Blacks since 1953.

New Zealand are in red hot form having recently reclaimed the Rugby Championship, but Jones has every faith in his players.

And the captain, who will win a world record 149th Wales cap, is hopeful Wayne Pivac’s side can rise to the occasion.

“The hoodoo and the record has got to go at some point but what I did say is that we need a performance,” said Jones.

“I keep talking about this period of coming into a new campaign and all the external things that are going on.

“Dare I say it, who is the pressure on? Is it us? Is it New Zealand? I don’t know. It depends on the neutral as to their opinion. But it is going to go sooner or later.

“We just need to focus on the rugby and I think that comes back to the messaging we’ve had from Wayne and the management – focus on us, get our completions in and our execution, and we will be where we want to be irrelevant of the result.

“If you want to use an American term, when you go to the Big House, you are in the Big House and everyone’s  going to be there on Saturday. For a lot of the players, that education and fundations have been laid from a young age.

“Now there is the chance to be able to step up across the whitewash and see it from the inside. That’s what it’s all about once you become a pro. That’s what we’ve got tomorrow.”

Jones and his second row partner Adam Beard will be going head-to-head with the most experienced lock partnership in international rugby history in the shape of Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock.

And Jones is expecting an extremely physical encounter against one of the best teams in the world.

“They’ve (Retallick and Whitelock) been in situ for a long, long time and the numbers stack up, but before you look at that, they share the load and are a proper duo in the boiler house,” said Jones.

“Their reputation speaks for itself.

“You pride yourself on your individual performance and you certainly have to raise that when you come up against players like that. You want to play against the best at international level and they’ve obviously picked a strong side.

“They made a lot of changes last weekend for their game against USA and they’ve obviously been on the road for a while. A few guys went ahead and a few have come in late so I don’t know if it’s performance or rotation selection, but they’ve gone with a strong side.

“With the succession they have it’s always going to be a strong side.”

This will also be the first time Wales will have played in front of a capacity crowd at the Principality Stadium since the 2020 Six Nations and Jones believes a full house will give the players a massive lift.

“It is very different, I think the roof is going to be open and hopefully the city feels it as well,” he said.

“As the squad and playing group we are definitely relishing the opportunity to experience what we have missed for a long time and some may never have experienced.”
