Richie Pugh’s side showed glimpses of their ability and even though teenage winger Iwan Pyrs Jones became an internet sensation with his dazzling individual try against France, Wales eventually departed the tournament when losing to the Frenchmen 38-12 in the 9th place semi-finals.
Wales had a golden opportunity to win their opening pool game against Scotland when racing out to a 14-0 lead thanks to two converted tries by Morgan Williams and Chris Smith.
Wales led 14-12 at the break but the Scots dominated the early exchanges of the second half to jump clear with Jordan Edmunds adding two more tries to the brace he scored in the first spell. Ewan Rosser and Callum Williams hit back but time ran out as Wales were edged out 26-24.
Argentina had to work hard for their 24-7 victory against Wales but Pugh’s side were no match for a rampant New Zealand side who showed impressive form with a 43-5 triumph.
Wales began day two in much better shape, with a last gasp try by Callum Williams earning a 24-19 win against England.

Cole Swannack’s converted try ensured the teams were locked 7-7 at the break. Lloyd Lewis and Morgan Williams then touched down but with time running out, Wales were facing defeat but Callum Williams used his strength to force himself over the try-line to sink England hopes.
France ended Wales involvement in the tournament in the 9th Place semi-finals but not before 18-year-old Iwan Pyrs Jones lit up the tournament with a stunning solo try where the beat shimmied and danced his way past two French defenders to touch down in the corner in spectacular style.
All 16 men’s teams now travel to Vancouver for the sixth round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2022 where the world class rugby sevens action will continue at BC Place on 16-17 April.
Wales have drawn Pool B where they will face Japan, New Zealand and Samoa.
