Wales skipper Biggar will be very much in Reffell’s sights when Northampton Saints head to Welford Road for an all-Midlands shoot out. Reffell is one of three uncapped players in the 32-strong Welsh squad set to play three Tests in South Africa next month.
The back row dynamo has been one of the stand-out players for Leicester Tigers this season as they topped the table from round 1 all the way through to the end of the regular league season. He will pack down alongside two South Africans in the back row in Hanro Liebenberg and Jasper Wiese.
Their job will be to stop Biggar using his boot and experience to run the show and steer Saints into another final. George North was in the Northampton side that beat Saracens 24-20 in the 2014 final, while Tigers haven’t won since 2010.
The Premiership champions have been determined by an end of season final since 2003 and former Wales backs coach Rob Howley was a winner with Wasps in the first two seasons. Another Welsh scrum half cap, Warren Fury, was also a winner with Wasps in 2005.
Mark Taylor helped Sale Sharks lift the title in 2006, while recently retired Wales and Cardiff prop Rhys Gill triumphed with Saracens in 2011. Phil Dolman joined Tomas Francis in the Exeter Chiefs side that won in 2017 and Francis picked up a second winners’ medal in 2020.
Two more South African bound squad members, Liam Williams and Nick Tompkins, teamed-up in the Saracens side that won in 2019, while former Wales hooker was a starter in the Harlequins pack last year in their 40-38 win over the Chiefs.
