The Wales speedster has hit top form on this tour scoring two tries in the opening test in Pretoria while his defensive and positional play came to the fore during last weekend’s historic victory in Bloemfontein. The Gloucester wing is one of the fastest players in world rugby, and he will be desperate to get the ball in space in Cape Town on Saturday.
“To be the first (Welsh) team to win on South African soil is amazing but ultimately, we’re here to win a Test series, said the 21-year-old. “Hopefully we can do that on Saturday.
“I just try to get my hands on the ball as much as I can, to create as many opportunities and help the boys out as much as I can. Hopefully, I can do that on Saturday.
“I felt at my best physically and mentally. I felt really fit coming into camp and that’s down to the consistency and playing all the matches for Gloucester at the end of last season.”
Rees-Zammit has been a revelation for Wales since making his test debut against France in 2020 and has thrived despite tough competition for a spot in the back-three from the likes of Alex Cuthbert, and Josh Adams. He was left out of Wales’ Six Nations trip to face England at Twickenham but showed tremendous character to regain his place in the side.
And he insists confidence is key to maintaining his top-class form for Wales. “Putting on the red shirt is everything and you have to play well here, especially against South Africa because we know how good they are,” he said.
“It was about just trying to get a bit of form. Alex Cuthbert and Josh Adams were playing really well at the time as well.
“It was just one of those where I had to go back, try to get some form and consistency. Then I got picked the week after.
“Confidence is probably the biggest one. When you have confidence, you feel like you’re on top of the world and you can play at your best.
“When you haven’t got that, it’s quite hard.”
