Ashton Hewitt can still recall the brace of tries he scored in his last outing for the Dragons – some achievement given the game was on 3 April, 2021.

A knee injury picked up in the act of scoring his second try in that European Challenge Cup game against Northampton Saints at Rodney Parade sidelined him for the rest of that season and the whole of the 2021-22 campaign.

That led to the inevitable question about if he would ever be able to get back to his brilliant best after knee surgery, but the good news is he is almost there. He stepped back from training last week to protect his hamstring, but expects to be able to explode back onto the URC scene next month.

Now 27, he has the experience to back-up his speed and talent and desperately wants to add to his 103 games and 33 tries for the Dragons

“I’m playing it safe sat the moment, so I don’t do anything too much coming off the back of the injuries I’ve had in the last two years. I’m feeling good, running with the physios and just ensuring ensure I don’t overdo it,” said Hewitt.

“There are no doubts in my mind I can come back and reach the same level as before. Everything is measured in training – speed, strength, skills – and I’m confident I can get back to where I was. I still think I can have a shot at getting into a Welsh shirt. That’s why we play the game, to try to reach the levels we feel we can achieve – I just need a bit of run of luck.

“It will start with getting into the Dragons team, helping them and taking things from there. Competition is what builds performances and pushes everyone to be better and there are lots of good wings at the club.

“That competitiveness is good for the individuals and the squad as a whole. I know I have to put my hand up to get into the team and then maintain my standards to stay there week in, week out.

“I know the players here aren’t going to make it easy for me, but I’m looking forward to the battle.”

There is no doubt that a fully fit and firing Hewitt will be a major asset to new head coach Dai Flanagan’s side. Both he and former Wales centre Cory Allen, who is getting back to match fitness after another major injury lay off, could help transform a back division that has also welcomed JJ Hanrahan from Clermont and Max Clark from Bath.

“I am always opitmist, but this year feels different – this is going to be a turning point season for the Dragons. There is a freshness about the squad. If you look at the quality and experience we’ve added to the squad, and the youngsters who are coming through, we’ve got a strong squad.” added Hewitt.

“Cory and I have spent a lot of time together going through our rehab together. It’s good to hear he is not too far off coming back.

“We’ve had a good pre-season and everyone is looking to impress the new coach Dai Flanagan. I’m in training, although been out this week due to my hamstring, and I’m going to train through the week off for the players this week.

“Hopefully I’ll be back with the squad the week after and put my hand up for the first or second game of the season.”
