Jones calls for Wales to ‘stick to gameplan’ against Georgians

Stephen Jones wants Wales to “stick to the gameplan” and not try to force things as they go in search of a second win in the Autumn Nations Series against Georgia.

The Wales backs coach fully understands what threats the Georgians, who are once again in Wales’ World Cup pool next year in France, will bring with them to Principality Stadium

“Sticking to the gameplan will be key. We have to be accurate in what we do, we have to be patient, and we have to be prepared to stick to our gameplan – the ball is in our court from that aspect,” said Jones.

“We’ve got the utmost of respect for the Georgians, the vast majority of who play in the Top 14. There are some very, very good clubs in the Top 14.

“Having been privileged to play with a lot of them in the Top 14 I know they’ve got some very physical players. They love the set-piece, so we respect what they are going to bring.

“Their strength is their set-piece. They are evolving their game-plan and their full back is a very good player for them.  Their scrum half tries to orchestrate a lot of the game around him, but they are very direct, physical and they enjoy the collisions.

“From an attacking perspective, we have to play in the right areas. We also have to deal with the collisions as well. Ultimately, we want to generate quick ball and if we don’t do that the game is a lot harder

“We want to play the game on our terms. We were strong when we met them in the first group game in the World Cup. In that game I thought we were economical and smart in the way we played, which allowed us to perform in the last 20 minutes.”

Head coach Wayne Pivac has talked all tournament about his side being more clinical in the opposition 22 and Jones is hoping to see a much higher return from Welsh endeavour in Round 3.

“If you look at the Argentina game for example, we were 20 points up after about 60 minutes. We were looking to kick on,” said Jones.

“For us as coaches it was really good learning. Now it’s important we transfer those learnings and make sure that when those opportunities come, we are clinical. It’s one thing moving up to the opposition 22 but obviously defensive systems change when you get 22 metres out.

“It’s about us recognising where the space is, seeing if we can still play with speed, and finding out of we cross the line. That’s a good challenge for us.

“I don’t think people have worked us out because we are evolving all the time ourselves. What we have to be is more efficient, so we’ve identified more opportunities to do that.”
