Alex Cuthbert returns to his old stomping when the two form sides in Welsh rugby, Cardiff and the Ospreys, go head-to-head in the URC clash at the Arms Park.

The Wales and British & Irish Lions wing scored the first try in the Ospreys side 34-14 win in the west Wales derby against the Scarlets on Boxing Day and now travels east to face the Capital City side.

Cuthbert returned to Wales with the Ospreys last season after having made his name at Cardiff and then leaving to play his rugby in England with Exeter Chiefs.

Both sides have hit a real run of form of late. The Ospreys beat the French champions, Montpellier, in France in the Heineken Champions Cup, while Cardiff recorded an historic first win by a Welsh region against the four new South African sides in Durban.

Cardiff’s last-gasp derby win over the Dragons at Rodney Parade on Boxing Day pushed them up to fifth in the URC table.

“You would probably make Cardiff favourites now with the amount of wins they have had over the last couple of weeks and the confidence they have built but we are going to be a tough side to beat,” said Cuthbert.

“These derby games, we don’t take them lightly and they are called derbies for a reason. There have been some cracking games over the last couple of weeks.

“A lot of these games are won on emotion and it’s about getting the top two inches and mindset right. You need to know what you are doing and you have to get your roles right.”

Cuthbert, 32, who returned to the Wales side during last season, knows all about the challenge facing his side against his former side in front of an expected sell-out crowd at the Arms Park.

“Cardiff are playing well and won a few in a row and we know the supporters will be right behind them. It will be a tough game but a good one to look forward to between the two form teams in Wales at the moment,” said Cuthbert.

“We are going to concentrate on ourselves and what we can imprint on the game and, hopefully, it goes our way.

“Cardiff have weapons all around the field, with the back three and their forward pack are going quite well and they are notorious at stealing ball. For us, the breakdown is going to be key and a big battle on the weekend.”
