Cardiff Arms Park was full of cheer as Wales ran in five tries in their biggest championship win since they defeated Scotland 39-3 in Cumbernauld in 2015. It was also their highest score in any game since they beat Hong Kong at the 2017 World Cup in Dublin by 39-15.
Skipper Hannah Jones, who was one of the try scorers in the Welsh capital, will now take her side to Scotland for round two before the reigning Grand Slam champions, England, come to the Arms Park for the ultimate challenge in round three.
That game is on Saturday, 15 April, and could well see an even bigger crowd that watched Wales play Ireland. The previous high was 4,875 for last year’s triumph over Scotland.
