Defeat leaves them four points behind Cardiff Rugby in the race for the Welsh Shield and one point ahead of Scarlets. The Ospreys are the holders of the regional title, which guarantees a ticket into the Heineken Champions Cup next season. They meet at Principality Stadium on Judgement Day on Saturday, 22 April.
It was the perfect send off for Edinburgh head coach Mike Blair in his last home game in charge as Ben Vellacott, Dave Cherry, Sam Skinner, Emilano Boffelli and Hamish Watson all crossed before the break. Wales hooker Dewi Lake responded for the visitors.
Darcy Graham scored two tries after the break as the home side put the game to bed, while Lake plundered a second and his replacement, fellow hooker Sam Parry, came up with a third.
The defeat also allowed Edinburgh to leapfrog Ospreys into 12th place in the table.
Vellacott and Cherry crossed in the opening 10 minutes for the home side to set the tone for the evening, although a Rhys Webb break then set-up Lake for his first try. The home side had the bonus-point in the bag after 20 minutes as Skinner and Boffelli, from all of 60 metres, added to the early damage and back row man Watson dived in for the fifth try to make it 35-7 at the break.
Lake’s second and Parry’s late effort were merely consolation tries for the Ospreys, who have just one game to go to complete their season.
