This was the Welsh side’s second successive win in the newly expanded cross-border tournament between Welsh, Irish and Scottish sides.

Lightning crossed for six tries to secure a bonus point win with N0.8 Gwennan Hopkins, wing Catherine Richards, half-backs Carys Hughes, Sian Jones and prop Abbey Constable, all crossing for tries.

Wales Test full back Nel Metcalfe also slotted three conversions for the home side.

Flanker Hollan Brogan scored a first half try for the Warriors with Aillie Tucker crossing for a brace deep into injury time.

Fly half Hughes, who played for Wales U20s on the summer tour in North America, impressed creating one try and scoring another for the Lightning but left the field in the second half due to injury.

Captain Bryonie King led from the front in the Lightning engine room and would have impressed the watching Wales coaches in the stands in the Welsh capital.

Glasgow showed plenty of endeavour and fire but indiscipline and too many unforced errors cost them in a fitting spectacle for the new-look Celtic Challenge.

Lightning won their opening game with a 20-5 win over Welsh rivals, Brython Thunder, at Rodney Parade on New Year’s Day.

In a bruising and abrasive opening, both sides defences held sway until the home side took the lead on quarter of an hour when Hopkins split the visitors defence to cross for the try. Full back Metcalfe added the conversion to make it 7-0.

Lightning stretched their lead after another period of pressure when a deft grubber by fly-half Carys Hughes put wing Richards over in the corner to give the Welsh side a 12-0 lead midway through the first half.

Glasgow then enjoyed a sustained period of pressure and flanker Holland Bogan crashed over for the visitors to haul the Scots back into the contest and to make it 12-5.

Fly-half Hughes then crossed for the home side’s third try after some slick handling in a sweeping attacking move to make it 17-5 at half-time to Lightning.

After the break, Gwalia started the second half the way they finished the first and caught Glasgow napping with an attack stopped just short of the visitor’s line after resolute defensive work by the visitors.

But Lightning weren’t to be denied and Wales prop Abbey Constable crossed for her try from short-range.

Hopkins then crossed for her second try with what is becoming a trademark barnstorming charge off the back of a scrum to stretch the home side’s lead.

Scrum half Jones then get in on the act with a try from a quick tap penalty before the Warriors replied with two late tries by replacement prop Tucker deep into injury time.

Clovers 20 Brython Thunder 5

Brython Thunder went down to 20-5 defeat after a gritty display against Irish side, Clovers, at Energia Park in Dublin on Saturday afternoon.

Captain Alex Callender crossed for her side’s only try with the Wales international, along with teammate Natalia John, producing typically aggressive performances for a Thunder side under pressure at scrum-time.

Number 8 Shona Wakley, who made her Wales debut at the 2010 World Cup, rolled back the years for the Thunder with one trademark charge against a much bigger Clovers pack. The visitors defence kept the Irish at bay.

In a tense and frenetic opening, Clovers opened the score with a try by scrum half Aisla Hughes after she broke through the visitors defence to crash over from short-range to give the home side a 5-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Thunder then lost scrum half Seren Singleton to a suspected shoulder injury and she was replaced by Wales scrum half Meg Davies and the visitors steadied the ship with an impressive period of phase play.

Skipper Callender finished off a well worked try after a driving lineout to score on the blindside to haul the visitors back into the contest. The Thunder skipper was, once again, in the thick of things with a vital turnover near to her side’s line to keep the score at 5-5 at half time.

After the break, both sides went down to 14 players when Clovers centre Michelle O’Driscoll was yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on and Thunder hooker Rosie Carr was sent to the sinbin for repeated scrum infringements.

Clovers took full advantage when lock Ruth Campbell crashed over in the corner after a period of pressure to give the home side a 10-5 lead. Captain Sadhbh McGrath extended Clover lead with a quick-tap penalty which fly half Meabh Deely converted. Deely added a later penalty to seal the win.
