The appointment of Lancaster comes at a crucial time for the Welsh region as they seek to drive through their proposed rebuild of St Helen’s to give them a new home.

The 44-year-old Lancaster is a Swansea native who has been head of sport and corporate engagement at Swansea University. During his time there he coached the rugby team into the BUCS Super League and helped develop the concept of the Welsh Varsity.

His new role will see him work closely with Ospreys new CEO Lance Bradley as the four-time winners of what is now the BKT United Rugby Championship attempt to make a generational change for the region and rugby in Swansea by redeveloping the traditional home of the game in the city.

“Richard’s vast experience, local roots and proven track record in commercial strategy and partnerships make him the ideal candidate to help us achieve our ambitious goals,” said Bradley.

“We look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on the club and our business partners. I would also like to express my gratitude to Swansea University for their assistance in facilitating a smooth transition process over the coming weeks.”

A WRU Level 4 coach, Lancaster played second row and back row for Mumbles, Swansea University, Swansea and London Welsh in a career that was cruelly cut short by a serious knee injury at the age of 24.

As well as elevating the Welsh Varsity into a major student sporting event he also helped oversee the creation of the National Network for Innovation in Sport & Health (NNIISH). He is also a board member of the Welsh Sports Association.

His extensive experience spans commercial partnerships, major events, fundraising, marketing and communications, making him a versatile and highly skilled professional. Including numerous rugby related roles, his involvement in the development of PROTECHT mouthguards.

“I’m thrilled to be taking on this new challenge at Ospreys Rugby. Having grown up in Swansea and having a deep connection with St Helen’s, this role feels like the perfect role in my professional journey,” said Lancaster.

“I look forward to contributing to the development of the historical ground and making it a thriving home for the Ospreys. This is an exciting time for the club, and I am eager to be a part of its future success.”
