Tom Hancock has been installed as the interim head coach for this weekend’s game against Bridgend at the Brewery Field. Pooler lost on the opening night of the season when they were beaten at home by reigning Premiership champions Llandovery, 21-18.
“After careful consideration and detailed discussions with Peter Jeffreys, it has been mutually decided that I step down from my role as head coach,” said Jones in a statement.
“Unfortunately, due to numerous contributing factors, I’m unable to continue my role at the club. This decision was not made lightly, and I want to express my gratitude to everyone I’ve worked with during my time in the role.
“It’s been hugely rewarding to represent this club, that means so much to me. I’m born and bred Pontypool and this club will always be a huge part of me.
“I’ve always demanded honesty from everyone at the club and it’s only right that I give the same honesty back to the club with this decision to step down. There is some great talent in the management team and playing group and I know they will continue the good work here and drive us forward.”
Jones first joined the club back in 1997 and spent more than a decade as hooker, following in his father’s footsteps – Steve ‘Junna’ Jones – by wearing the captain’s armband.
He made 172 appearances for the club, the final one coming in a 39-26 win over Tata Steel in April 2019. He helped the club win the Welsh National Division 1 title in 2003, and then captained the club to a repeat title success in 2008.
He returned to Pontypool Park in 2013 as part of Mike Hook’s coaching set-up before taking over the role himself three years later. He led the team in 163 games over eight seasons, winning 143 games and three unbeaten league campaigns as they won a handful of Premiership crowns.
“I want to thank Leighton for his immense contribution over the past decade. He has epitomised everything that Pontypool stands for,” said club chairman Peter Jeffreys.
“His dedication, passion, commitment and honesty have truly embodied the spirit of the club and I’m incredibly grateful for his contribution. I truly hope we see Leighton at the club in future as he’ll always be welcome.”
