Jason Hyatt was delighted after Aberavon ended a run of four straight losses in Super Rygbi Cymru as they earned maximum points against RGC at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

Full-back Scott Delnevo, hooker Luke Davies, wingers Cori Lewis-Jenkins and Felix Gilbert and outside centre Frankie Jones all scored for the Wizards. Outside half Ed Dunford kicked three conversions and a penalty.

It saw Aberavon get their phase two block of fixtures off to a winning start after losing five from six in block one. Scrum-half Dan Roderick and wingers Sam Stoddart and Rhys Tudor replied with tries for RGC, while Billy McBryde also chipped in with a penalty for the Gogs – but they left empty handed and remain without a win on the road this season.

Reflecting on his side’s victory, Aberavon head coach Hyatt said: “I felt really pleased for the players because they’ve put a tremendous amount of work in.

“It was a tough block one where we’ve learned some very valuable lessons, but to take that next step and raise confidence we needed to get that win – and we discussed that as a group in the build-up.

“I think the players responded superbly well, especially after four weeks off and some of the rugby we played was fantastic.

“It showed the quality of our performance that we probably left two or three tries on the field. It was also a very slippery surface – and we had drizzle from start to finish – so that makes it even more impressive that we were able to earn six points from those set of circumstances.”

Aberavon were also boosted by the returns to the squad from injury of Gilbert, Ben Gregory and Gwilliam Evans, with captain Joe Gage was making only his second appearance since also returning from injury.

“They are quality players and very positive characters and will add to the overall feel in camp,” continued Hyatt.

“It’s been well documented that we’ve had horrendous injuries this year, but that has given us an opportunity to really blood some exciting young talent.

“We’ve got a young squad anyway but when you’re exposing 18 or 19 years olds to that level of rugby on a regular basis, it’s great for their development as players, which is also vitally important and fits the bill in terms of everything we’re about.”

Next up for the Wizards is a home clash with second place Ebbw Vale on Saturday.

“Every game is tough in SRC, that’s the beauty of it. But this win over RGC was a massive boost for us and I’m just really chuffed for the squad and the coaches that we got that win and six points.

“Everybody will take a huge amount of confidence from that. Performance sport is all about confidence and momentum and that’s where the building blocks start.

“So that will gee the players on and everyone in the environment now to have another good week this week and go in all guns blazing against Ebbw Vale.”
