McBryde edges Lloyd out of top spot as leading SRC points scorer

It’s a New Year and all change at the top of the try and points scoring charts of Super Rygbi Cymru.

Cardiff winger Dewi Cross has been deposed as the leading try scorer with Ebbw Vale’s captain Joe Franchi leaping to the top of the pile after scoring against Pontypool just before the New Year. The Steelmen’s hooker is the first player to reach double figures with 10 tries while Cross is now nestled right behind him with nine tries. There is a clutch of players hot on his heels with eight tries, including Alun Rees (Cardiff), Lewis Morgan (Carmarthen Quins), McCauley Rowley (Bridgend) and Sam Stoddard (RGC).

Evan Lloyd and Billy McBryde had a royal shootout in North Wales where the latter sealed a famous win against the league leaders with a last gasp conversion to take his personal tally from the game to 21 points. He collected two tries in the process to usurp Lloyd at the top of the points table. He is now leading the pack with 132 points, just one point ahead of Lloyd who claimed 19 points in his side’s narrow 41-39 defeat in a match which must surely be a contender as the game of the season so far.

The eveness of the league is illustrated by the fact that no club is dominating the various sections. Seven of the 10 clubs have a player leading a category. Evan Swansea, who are languishing at the foot of the table, have in Josh Phillips a player who figures in three categories and he actually possesses the best kick success percentage with 79% and finds himself just 14 points shy of reaching a century of points.

If the All Whites can find some more consistency, and a shock win against Aberavon should provide the ideal boost, then with Phillips driving them forward, it should not be too long before they snag a few more victories in the SRC.
