The Lightning recorded their third win in a row in a convincing display against an impressive Edinburgh outfit.

The Welsh side earned a bonus point victory and were well worth the win, with scrum half Sian Jones, captain Bryonie King, and wings Caitlin Lewis and Courtney Greenway, all crossing for tries.

The Welsh side went into this fixture second in the league table behind Irish side Wolfhounds, who won the title last season, and full of confidence after their recent run of form.

Gwalia recorded a 29-27 win in the first league clash between the sides in the Scottish capital last weekend but were simply too much for the visitors.

Lightning played with a real attacking threat built on a solid defence and with a real work-ethic and an appetite to play rugby.

The likes of Alaw Pyrs and Maisie Davies enhanced their reputations and the likes of centre Anwen Owen looks like another prospect at Gwalia.

Lock Pyrs set the tone with an early linebreak with her first touch of the ball in a frenetic opening with both sides showing their desire to play.

Edinburgh opened the score when wing Hannah Walker crossed after some impressive phase-play by the visitors to give them the lead.

Gwalia replied almost straightaway after scrum half Sian Jones crossed for the try and took advantage of a barnstorming run by prop Maisie Davies. Fly half Hughe added the conversion to make it 7-5 to the home side.

The home side then pounded the Edinburgh defence and it held firm with prop Davies held up over the line after another impressive carry by the young Wales prop.

Both sides probed for moments and had their fair share of possession but defences prevailed and shackled any attacking movement by either side.

Momentum switched between both sides in a tense remainder of a closely fought but entertaining first half, with the home side going in 7-5 ahead at half-time.

After the break, skipper King crashed over from short-range after a period of pressure and some big carries by the pack. Scrum half Jones added the extras to make it 14-5.

Possession see-sawed between the sides before Welsh international wing Caitlin Lewis was put away and raced away from the half-way line for a third try for Gwalia.

Jones added the conversion to make it 21-5 midway through the second half as the Welsh side opened up an impressive lead over the visitors.

Gwalia’s defence held firm when they held Edinburgh up over their own line to deny them a try from a driving lineout.

But then a break by wing Lewis saw some slick inter-passing and a break by skipper King saw the other wing Courtney Greenway cross for the home side’s fourth try.

It capped an impressive afternoon for a Welsh side playing with real confidence and really finding its feet in the Celtic Challenge.
