The Gogs had won both of their opening two cup fixtures against Aberavon and Cardiff respectively, while also defeated the Drovers in their league showdown at Parc Eirias back in September.
But this time they were no match for Euros Evans’ side who ran in nine tries – with six of those coming in the first half – on their way to making it two from two in the pool and 11 wins on the bounce in all competitions.
“I thought we were excellent, first half in particular. We were accurate and very clinical with the opportunities that we had, which got us into a good lead and made it tough for them to come back after that,” said Drovers’ head coach Evans.
“RGC away is tough, especially this year – they’ve had some really excellent results, and we knew we needed a performance to make sure we got the result.
“We knew that had we lost, it would have given us a mountain to climb really to get out of the group, so it was a really important result, and we’re delighted.”
The visitors ran riot in the opening 40 minutes. Lock Ed Scragg opened the scoring after the visitors had charged down a kick and that was soon followed by scores from centre Adam Warren, hooker Taylor Davies and flanker Tiaan Sparrow.
Outside half Ioan Hughes added the extras to all of them to make it 28-0 with the first bonus point already in the bag.
Scrum-half Connor Dever replied for RGC, converted by full-back Caio Parry, but the visitors scored again straight from the re-start, with Davies grabbing his second, and that was followed by a try from left wing Llien Morgan, converted by Hughes, to extend the Drovers’ lead to 40-7 at half time.
After a break a try for scrum-half George McDonald, a second for Warren and one for centre Rhodri Jones completed a thumping maximum six-point cup win on road for Llandovery. Hughes added two further conversions and replacement Sam Potter also kicked one.
RGC ran in three tries of their own in the second half through No 8 Sam Williams and wing Sam Stoddart who scored twice, to take a bonus point. Dion Jones added the extras to all of them.
Gogs director of rugby Josh Leach pulled no punches in his assessment of his side’s performance.
“To put it plainly, that was embarrassing – we can’t just turn up and expect to be in the game. We were flat, we were hesitant, and Llandovery punished us for it and the game was over after 20 minutes,” said Leach.
The cup resumes on 1 March when Llandovery entertain Bridgend at Church Bank. RGC have one pool match remaining, which is at Bridgend on 15 March, a game they must win to stand any chance of topping the pool.
