Wales Sevens Coach Dai Rees said: “Everyone has worked very hard since coming together at the start of last week. To beat Samoa was a great achievement and had it not been for their victory over the All Blacks, we would have been guaranteed a place in the top eight draw.
“The nine new players in the squad have quickly adapted to the environment. We played a warm-up game for the George tournament this morning (Wednesday) and it is clear that players like Martyn Thomas and Alec Jenkins have already gained a great deal from having a competitive international tournament under their belt.
“We are lucky to have seasoned Sevens players like captain Richie Pugh, Jonathan Edwards and Rhodri McAtee in the squad who the youngsters are learning a lot from. With Tal Selley added to the squad we are hoping to build on last weekend’s efforts this weekend.
“We have England, Argentina and Portugal on Day One and two wins in those games would give us a good chance of making the Cup competition. There are no easy matches; Portugal beat Australia last week, but at the same time we should be targeting the likes of Argentina who beat us narrowly in Dubai after we gave up a 10-0 lead.”
