WWRU/DRT Tag Tournament at Millennium Stadium

The girls involved went through qualifying tournaments organised by rugby development officers to make the finals, which will be held at the Stadium for the second time.

Currently in its fourth year, the competition has gone from strength to strength with 170 teams from 106 schools across Wales.

WWRU Manager, Jilly Holroyd, feels that this second event hosted at the Millennium Stadium should give a real boost to women’s tag rugby.

“The girls will find it so rewarding to play in such an iconic venue and this will no doubt trigger an increase of participation in tag rugby amongst girls and maybe full contact rugby on a larger scale,” said Holroyd.

“This is an exciting and challenging experience that will inspire other girls and we should see talented players willing to take it further who have the ambition to play for their nation eventually.”

The tournament has been sponsored by the Dragons Rugby Trust. This fantastic support has funded the provision of equipment for all schools of the competition, for community coaches to go into schools and provide coaching sessions and for one individual in each school to take the Tag Rugby Leader Award.

All girls taking part in the final have received a free t-shirt in a colour individual to their team to compete throughout the day.

Nomis, the official boot supplier for the Welsh Women’s Rugby Union are providing a goody bag for the U14 and U18 player of the tournament which will consist of Nomis clothing and Nomis boots specifically designed for women.

Mellissa Berry, Wales Women’s Captain, will be in attendance throughout the day to speak to players and present awards. She commented, “I am delighted to be there to help the girls by giving them some advice and encouragement, and I am sure we will witness a display of very good performance throughout this fun event.”
