Wales Sevens make top four at London Sevens
Having topped their Pool on Day One with wins over England (22-0) and Portugal (15-14), Wales made it to their first ever Cup semi-final of an IRB Sevens tournament by beating Scotland 15-5 in the quarter-finals of the Twickenham event.
Two tries from Jonny Vaughton and a third from Rhodri McAtee took Wales past Scotland to take Dai Rees’s side to the Cup semis.
Fiji had faltered on Day One and only scraped into the quarter-finals after a last-gasp win over France in their final Pool game, but the World Series leaders rediscovered their title winning form at the semi-final stage of the IRB Series tournament. Two tries from star player William Ryder helped the South Sea Islanders to a 24-7 victory, Scarlets flanker Rob McCusker scoring Wales’s only try of the match.
Wales Sevens Head Coach Dai Rees said, “Our boys have produced some outstanding Sevens rugby this weekend. Each and every player was totally committed throughout which got them the top four finish they deserved.
“We will take that confidence away with us and work hard this week to ensure we build on this performance at Murrayfield next weekend.”
