Centre and captain Chris O’Brien led his troops from the front throughout and went over for one of his side’s scores while second-row David Roberts crashed over for the other. The reliable Danny Skyrme converted both and added a penalty to hand his side a famous victory.
Also on the giant-killing trail were Blackwood Stars of Division Six East who defied a four league gap to stun Ynysybwl of Division Two East 19-15.
Despite a first-half brace from No.8 Jamie Sims, the Stars found themselves 15-12 behind at the break, but they refused to lie down and it was prop forward Mark Hoskins who sparked the celebrations as he crashed over for the match-clinching try.
They will be joined in the hat for the next round by Abergavenny of Division Three East who also overturned a half-time deficit to record an impressive win over Cwmllynfell of Division One West.
The Gwent side, who have only lost once this season, went 10-0 ahead through a converted Stuart Davies try and a Steve Laing penalty, only to throw away the lead on the stroke of half-time to trail 14-10. A spirited second half revival though, first saw James Harris and later Paul Cornock touch down to seal a 25-17 triumph.
UWIC were the highest scorers of the round as they routed hapless Kenfig Hill 90-3. Flanker Guy Thompson was his side’s main beneficiary collecting four touchdowns while Rhys Crane also raced in for a hat-trick. Simon Humberstone collected twenty points from the boot converting 10 of the students’ 14 tries.
Newbridge and Pontypool of Division One East had the opportunity to renew acquaintances after facing one another in the league two weeks ago and it was Pooler who made it two wins out of two at the Welfare Ground as they edged a nail-biter 24-23.
The visitors had raced into a 19-0 half-time lead through scores from No.8 Micky Coughlin and winger Nathan Daniels, before tries from Steve Smith, Tom Edwards and Rhys Bowen brought Newbridge right back into the contest. Garteh Betts had the last laugh though and his try was enough to send Pooler into the next round at the expense of their Gwent rivals.
Fullback Steve Robinson was the hero at Rhydfelin where he scored all Beddau’s points, including a try, in a 19-17 win.
