Former Wales captain Young led Cardiff Blues into the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup for the first time in seven years last month.

Now he will take charge of the Baa-Baas at Twickenham before facing an International XV in Brussels and a third fixture, yet to be confirmed.

Young, 40, said: “The prospect of working with some of the biggest names in world rugby is a real honour and tremendously exciting. Playing for the Baa-Baas was always something to relish and from what I’ve heard nothing much has changed.

“Even against the toughest opposition the Barbarians have the knack of getting the delicate balance right between match preparation, meeting people and turning in winning performances.”

Former British Lions prop Young turned out six times for the invitational club, including games against New Zealand and Australia and has been linked with the forwards coach position with the British Lions next year.

Barbarians President Micky Steele-Bodger said: “We are delighted that Dai Young has accepted our invitation to take charge of what promises to be another star-studded squad on this year’s tour.

“We have followed Dai’s impressive progress as a coach closely and feel that both he and the club will benefit from working together on the tour.”
