Halfpenny hoping to continue winning run

Leigh Halfpenny is hoping he can carry his try scoring form as the U20 Six Nations tournament continues.

Halfpenny’s late try sealed Wales U20’s second U20 Six Nations win of the season, this time over Italy U20. Halfpenny touched down with two minutes remaining to seal back-to-back victories for Patrick Horgan’s men.

The 19-year-old Cardiff Blues flier made it two tries in two outings following his score against Scotland U20 a fortnight ago. His score came either side of tries by centres Gareth Owen and Jonathan Davies’s intercepted try in injury-time at Rodney Parade.

Halfpenny said: “It was a big moment for me and I was delighted to score. Italy were still firmly in the match but my try allowed us to pull away. We got off to a flying start and that’s something we’ve emphasised as key in the squad. The Italians were really physical and we had to adapt our style of play to a tighter game.

“We like to play an expansive game and we didn’t get much ball in hand. But in the second half, our attitude was spot on and we thoroughly deserved the win. I’m really confident at the moment and fingers crossed I will keep my place in the team for the match against Ireland. And hopefully my try-scoring will continue for the rest of the tournament.”
