Wales team physio Mark Davies today confirmed Sale Sharks scrum half Dwayne Peel will undergo a scan on an injured hamstring to determine his fitness to face Italy in the RBS 6 Nations clash at Stadio Flaminio on Saturday.
Mike Phillips is on standby to take up his regional Ospreys partnership with fly half James Hook, should Peel be ruled out when results of the scan are known tomorrow.
London Irish scrum-half Warren Fury has been called in to train with the Wales squad this week with Gloucester’s Gareth Cooper currently being treated at his club for a groin problem and doubts also surrounding Scarlets scrum half Martin Roberts (ribs).
“Dwayne was unable to travel today, but is set to join up with us tomorrow and we will know more after we see the player together with the results of a scan he has undergone this afternoon,” said Davies.
“Martin Roberts sustained a rib cartilage injury on Sunday and went off in the second half. He is obviously very sore and we plan to run a few more tests on him.
“Gareth Cooper has fully recovered from his knee operation, but he has had groin problems as well. He is currently under the care of Gloucester Rugby and we are monitoring reports on his fitness.”
Fury is ready to take up the place on the Wales’ bench which would be vacated by a promoted Phillips if injuries rule out Peel, Roberts and Cooper.
Fury won his two international caps to date during Wales’s two-match summer tour of South Africa last year.
