Cooper, 30, began his senior rugby career as an understudy to his hero Rob Howley at the Arms Park while studying at UWIC.
This time he will be first choice scrum-half at the Blues and he already had his eyes set on adding more trophies to the EDF Energy Cup in the new City of Cardiff stadium.
Cooper said: “There is definitely the quality to win something else this season. We want to be winning as many trophies as we can. But consistency is going to be the key for us because we didn’t do that well in the Magners League.”
The Wales star has signed a two-year deal to join the reigning Anglo-Welsh champions and Heineken Cup semi-finalists from Gloucester.
And the Pencoed product, who has had spells at the Celtic Warriors and Newport Gwent Dragons, revealed the Blues were the only side he wanted to join once he decided on a return to the land of his fathers.
Cooper said: “If there is one side in Wales, I wanted to play for it was the Blues. You just have to look at the form they showed last season and this is the place to be. There isn’t anywhere better to be at the moment.”
The 42 times capped scrum-half was part of the Wales Grand Slam squads in both 2005 and 2008. Now he hopes bringing success to David Young’s side can cement his hopes of Wales No 9 jersey he made his own last autumn.
Cooper said: “I am as competitive as ever and I want to be wearing the No 9 shirt for Wales. I will be busting my gut to make that position my own.”
With a brand new new stadium and expectations high following last season’s success, Cooper ‘s Blues move has certainly provided him with the platform to achieve his ambitions.
