Byrne, who has recently returned to action for the Ospreys after missing the Invesaco Perpertual Series with knee ligament damage, was  named in Warren Galtand’s 35-man squad.

With kicking becoming an increasingly important part of tactics in the modern game, it is no surprise that Jenkins is relieved to see British and Irish Lion Byrne, who is renowned for his long-range kicking back in the squad.

Jenkins said: “It’s a massive boost having Lee back as it gives us a lot different options at full-back with his kicking, and with James Hook playing really well for us there in the autumn, Lee will put up a great challenge for the position.”

Hook will also face further challenge for his preferred number ten shirt as Jenkins hailed his fellow Osprey and outside-half contender Dan Biggar.

Record-points scorer Jenkins said: “At only twenty years of age, Dan’s confidence is fantastic. He bosses everyone about, even the coaches, and his desire to win and succeed in everything he does is up there with the best.”

The selection of the likes of Biggar, Hook and Byrne once again sees a strong Ospreys contingent named in the squad including surprise call ups for the region’s youth products Kristian Phillips and Tom Prydie.

Saracens prop Rhys Gill and Blues scrum-half Richie Rees make up the four uncapped players as Wales look to develop their strength in depth before they kick off this years Six Nations campaign at Twickenham on 6th February.
