Waunarlwydd, Bridgend, Merthyr and Blackwood are flying the flag for Division One clubs in the SWALEC Cup after the weekend’s round two matches.

While Blackwood received a bye, Waunarlwydd recovered from being 13-19 down at the interval to pip Bonymaen 34-31and now host Aberavon at the next stage. The Wizards were far too strong for One East outfit Bedlinog who crashed to a 74-6 defeat though they were only 24-6 down at half time.

Blackwood will travel to Rodney Parade to meet a Newport side that crossed the Felinfoel line 12 times with wing Owen Broad claiming a try hat-trick in their 74-15 victory, while Bridgend’s reward for defeating Ebbw Vale 27-6 is a visit to Cardiff Arms Park where they will meet a Cardiff side that edged out Beddau 35-27.

Merthyr will be be confident of putting up a good display against Glamorgan Wanderers at the Memorial Ground but Wanderers were good value for their 41-36 win over Corus in windy conditions.

Neath found it tough going at Bargoed but thanks to three penalties from David Langdon they scraped home 14-5 to set up a heavyweight round three tie at Sardis Road against Pontypridd.

Llandovery made home advantage count by defeating Llanharan 14-12 and with Carmarthen routing Maesteg 50-0 at Llynfi Road, it’s the Quins who travel to Church Bank for the next round.

Bedwas came away from Carmarthen Athletic 18-7 winners and will make the daunting trip to St Helen’s to face to Swansea.

Two North Wales sides are through to round four of the SWALEC Plate after Caernarfon won 14-13 at Nant Conwy and Ruthin defeated Mold 11-0. Caernarfon travel to Risca who won 31-26 at Penarth, while Ruthin play host to Aberdare of Three South East.

Mountain Ash are unbeaten in Two East and a 15-5 victory over Llantwit Fardre has set up a fourth round tie at Tondu. The Waterwheelers beat Heol y Cyw 11-7 and they are going well in Two West so this will be a tough battle.

Ammanford top Two West and a 21-3 success against Penclawdd gives them a home tie against Kidwelly who are just behind the Recreation Ground side in second spot.

Pontypool United pipped Brynmawr 18-16 and Tylorstown also recorded an 18-16 victory at Brecon

Senghenydd beat Blackwood Stars 29-24 in the SWALEC Bowl and will meet fellow Four East side Blaenavon who won 23-19 against Usk. Trebanos were good value for their 23-16 win against Ystradgynlais but now face a tough tie at Tonyrefail of of Four South East. Amman United crushed Burry Port 45-10 and will meet Tenby, also of Four West, in round five after the Seasiders edged out Aberaeron 27-23.

Cardiff Medicals live to fight another day after a shock 19-18 victory at Nelson and they will now travel to Hafodyrynys in good spirits.
